How it works
The deskA calm manuscript editor with a binder, comments, find, page view, and track changes.Canon checksSettle a fact once. Asten marks any page that disagrees, and shows both sides.CastCharacters and other entities with aliases, notes, and the facts you’ve confirmed. Two clocksStory time and reading order, kept separately, so flashbacks are a choice and not a mistake.WorldAn optional wall, atlas, and dossier. Spark, sketch, settle. Never a gate. The compilerDeterministic rules with stable codes, suppressions, snapshots, and an append-only history.Method packsOptional sets of rules and hints. Turn on what helps; nothing becomes doctrine.Word & Google DocsCompile to Markdown, Fountain, HTML, .docx, EPUB, and Final Draft. Optional Word and Docs add-ins talk to your own machine.Local-firstOne file on your computer. No account, no sync, no telemetry, no training.

Subprocessors and third parties

Updated 25 October 2026Verne Ltd.

A detail of a tomb painting: farm workers cutting, binding and carrying grain.

The short version

  • No third party processes your manuscript for Verne, because Verne never receives it.
  • Vercel hosts this website. A server Verne rents runs the hosted pre-alpha. Verne’s business email provider carries the messages you send to Verne.
  • Microsoft and Google are involved only if you choose to use the Word or Google Docs add-ins.
  • Verne uses no analytics, advertising, payment, or customer-relationship vendors.

The desk

None. Your manuscript is stored in SQLite on your computer and is never sent to Verne, so no vendor processes it on Verne’s behalf. The optional assistant in release 0.0.1b can send requests to an AI provider you choose with your own key and consent; that provider acts for you, under your own agreement with it, and Verne receives nothing through it. If a future build would send data to any other third party, the interface will say so first, and this page will be updated.

Website and email

NamePurposeDataLocation
Vercel Inc.Hosting and edge delivery of this website, and protection against abuseRequest data: IP address, user agent, time, path, referrerUnited States company with a global edge network
The server provider for the hosted pre-alphaA virtual server Verne rents and operates, which runs the hosted pre-alpha and its sandboxesWhat you create in a sandbox (deleted after 24 hours), the asten_visitor cookie’s hash, web-server request dataMay be outside your country; see international transfers
Verne’s business email providerReceiving, storing, and sending mail for info@vernesystems.comYour email address, name, message, attachments, and email metadataMay be outside your country; see international transfers

Each works under its own terms and data protection commitments. The privacy policy explains what is collected and why.

Only if you choose them

MicrosoftSupplies Office.js, which the Word task pane must load, and runs Word itselfOrdinary request data for Office.js; your Word document, under your own agreement with MicrosoftMicrosoft’s infrastructure
GoogleRuns the Docs sidebar in Google Apps Script, and Google Docs itselfYour document and Apps Script usage, under your own agreement with GoogleGoogle’s infrastructure

These are not Verne’s subprocessors in the usual sense. You use them under your own agreements with Microsoft and Google, and Verne receives nothing through them. The add-ins send the passages you file only to the Asten local API on your computer.

What Verne does not use

No analytics, advertising, payment, or customer-relationship (CRM) vendors. No font services, tag managers, or social media widgets. This website’s Content Security Policy allows scripts, styles, and fonts only from the site itself.

Changes

If Verne adds a service that processes personal information, this page will be updated before that service starts. Questions: info@vernesystems.com.

Asten

Let AI be your editor, not your writer.

A local-first writing desk that marks where a draft contradicts the facts you have settled. It never changes your text.
