Asten
How it works
The deskA calm manuscript editor with a binder, comments, find, page view, and track changes.Canon checksSettle a fact once. Asten marks any page that disagrees, and shows both sides.CastCharacters and other entities with aliases, notes, and the facts you’ve confirmed. Two clocksStory time and reading order, kept separately, so flashbacks are a choice and not a mistake.WorldAn optional wall, atlas, and dossier. Spark, sketch, settle. Never a gate. The compilerDeterministic rules with stable codes, suppressions, snapshots, and an append-only history.Method packsOptional sets of rules and hints. Turn on what helps; nothing becomes doctrine.Word & Google DocsCompile to Markdown, Fountain, HTML, .docx, EPUB, and Final Draft. Optional Word and Docs add-ins talk to your own machine.Local-firstOne file on your computer. No account, no sync, no telemetry, no training.
Every feature runs on your own computer. All features
NovelistsFor long manuscripts where details drift between chapters.WorldbuildersFor fantasy and science-fiction writers whose world is bigger than the book.ScreenwritersFor scripts with timelines, reveals, and a cast that has to stay straight.Fan-fiction writersFor writers keeping their own version of an existing canon.AI tinkerersFor people who use AI daily and want a writing tool that draws a clear line.

A detail of a tomb painting: farm workers cutting, binding and carrying grain.

The short version

  • Asten is open source under the MIT License: you may use, copy, change, and redistribute it, including commercially.
  • Keep the copyright and license notice with any copy you pass on.
  • Your manuscripts are yours. The license gives Verne no rights in them.

The MIT License

The Asten source code on GitHub and the builds Verne publishes, including the desk, the desktop app, the local API, and the Word and Google Docs add-ins, are released under the MIT License. Its full text, which is also the LICENSE file in the repository, follows.

Copyright (c) 2026 Verne Ltd.

Permission is hereby granted, free of charge, to any person obtaining a copy of this software and associated documentation files (the “Software”), to deal in the Software without restriction, including without limitation the rights to use, copy, modify, merge, publish, distribute, sublicense, and/or sell copies of the Software, and to permit persons to whom the Software is furnished to do so, subject to the following conditions:

The above copyright notice and this permission notice shall be included in all copies or substantial portions of the Software.

Your work is not licensed to Verne

Your manuscripts, notes, facts, comments, snapshots, exports, and the local database are yours. The license runs one way, from Verne to you. You grant Verne nothing in your writing, and Asten never trains on it.

You may keep, copy, export, publish, and sell what you write with Asten, without credit or payment to Verne.

Names and logos

The MIT License covers the software, not Verne’s trademarks. You may say that your work is based on Asten, but a modified version or a hosted service must not present itself as Asten or as a Verne product. See the trademark page.

Pre-alpha builds

Asten is in early development, and release 0.0.1b is a pre-alpha. A build may stop running, may change between versions, and may be replaced or withdrawn. Verne has no obligation to provide updates, support, or any particular feature.

Your project file does not depend on a build. Before a build is replaced or withdrawn, keep the database, or export your work, and you will lose nothing.

Third-party components

Asten and this website include components made by others, such as fonts and open-source libraries. Each keeps its own license, and nothing in this license limits the rights those licenses give you. The credits list them.

How this fits with the terms

The MIT License governs the software. The terms of use and the acceptable use policy govern this website and the hosted pre-alpha that Verne runs. Questions: info@vernesystems.com.

Asten

Let AI be your editor, not your writer.

A local-first writing desk that marks where a draft contradicts the facts you have settled. It never changes your text.
